Carlos Dunga has been loved
by everyone who considers himself an avid football fan. Having lifted the 1994
World Cup for Brazil and captaining the side again to the France 1998 World
Cup, he is regarded as a true son of football and has certainly paid his dues
to the game. His smooth transition from one of the few footballers to have
become successful in management has not been called to question as he helped
the Brazil national team adopt a new philosophy of football where they blended
football of their own with that of the world and saw them win the 2007 COPA
AMERICA in Ecuador and the 2009 FIFA CONFEREDATIONS CUP in South Africa coming
from two goals down to win 3-2.
The 2010 World Cup featured
many omissions from Esteban Cambiasso from the Argentina squad and Mario
Balotelli at age 20 from the Azzuri squad was climaxed by the exclusion of the
in-form Ronaldinho who was 30 at the time from the Selecao squad. Ronaldinho led Milan to finishing
third in the Lega Serie A and played well in the Champions league facing a
first round exit at the hands of Manchester United.
Many pundits of the world game
started calling some of his decisions to question whiles others praised him for
his courage to drop big name players from the game with no strong impositions.
So many years have passed
and Brazil have sailed on under good and bad times, falling off the COPA
AMERICA in 2011 and with former boss Luis Felipe Scolari reinstated after
Mano Menezes, many senior players were called to try their hands out and
amongst others Ronaldinho who was past his prime was called in friendly games,
the highlight a match versus England. Scolari saw a great person and a great
footballer who reads the game and knows how to go about the defence without
committing any offence but winning the ball and scoring important headers so
made him captain.
The 2013 CONFEDERATIONS CUP
held in Brazil as a dress rehearsal for the World Cup saw Thiago Silva captain
the side to a major international tournament where his leadership and
organization of the defence earned him many accolades by pundits and eventually
being included in the 2013 FIFPRO XI for the first time. The World Cup proved
successful under his expert tutelage and with Thiago Silva’s absence there was no leadership on the
pitch and the defence was in despair and needed massive repair as Germany
thrashed them 7-1. Silva came back but the psychological turmoil they have been
through could not be accumulated for and the Netherlands beat them 3-0 to third
place finish.
Thiago Silva still remained
the best defender in the world and after the World Cup Dunga was handed the job
and the unfair treatment he handed to Ronaldinho out of no particular reason
has been made to Thiago Silva. Zlatan Ibrahimovic claimed that Silva is the
best defender out there and so far as he is around the defence is safe. How
could Dunga put him through shades of psychological unrest by first taking his
captaincy, taking away the jersey number which was given to him after Lucio and
being placed on the bench to watch proceedings as if he was part of the
tactical making system.
If things do not change,
Thiago Silva would not be able to give his very best for the Selecao as has
been demonstrated clearly that the Brazilian national soccer team needs men
like Silva to have a successful tournament wherever they find themselves
against dominating teams.
Whatever it is, it just sums
up the hatred of football for which Thiago Silva is the latest victim.
